The weekly shop is a great leveller. Rich or poor, young or old, we all rely on grocery stores for those weekly store cupboard essentials and last-minute dinner plans. But not all grocery stores deliver the same great level of customer service.

To understand how consumers really feel, PissedConsumer analyzed 9,642 survey responses collected across the United States between November 2022 and November 2025. The ranking is based on three measures: retention intent, customer satisfaction, and recommendation intent, combined into a single score.

Only companies with at least 50 valid responses for each survey question were included in the ranking; as a result, some large or well-known supermarket chains may not be represented. However, you can easily look up your favourite grocery store’s reviews on PissedConsumer.

What Are the Best Grocery Stores in the USA?

Now on to a much more positive list—the best grocery stores in the US. Based on consumer feedback collected by PissedConsumer, the grocery stores that earned higher rankings due to their stronger issue resolution, higher satisfaction scores, and better recommendations include Albertsons, Kroger, Costco, Food Lion, and Trader Joe's. Although there are still some customer reviews that demonstrate they don’t get everything right.

List of the Best Supermarkets in the USA

Company Recommendation % CS Satisfaction % Future Use % Score
Trader Joe’s 60 71.9 67 1989
Food Lion 54 85.7 50 1897
Costco 51 70.6 38 1596
Kroger 36 61.2 55 1522
Albertsons 29 75.0 43 1470

Trader Joe’s: At the top of the best grocery store list

Trader Joe’s tops our list as the best grocery store in America. The specialty grocery chain is known for its unique private-label products, curated selection, and distinctive in-store culture. Rather than competing with other brands on sheer scale, Trader Joe’s focuses on offering high-quality, affordable items (many of which are exclusive to the brand), which creates a loyal customer base.

Again, consumer reviews on PissedConsumer consistently highlight Trader Joe’s friendly staff as one of the brand’s biggest strengths. Shoppers often describe positive in-store interactions and a relaxed atmosphere, although some express frustration when favorite products are discontinued or when stores become crowded.

The staff member referenced in this review (#6329820), almost certainly deserves a bunch of flowers:

Needed to know if flowers were organic or not. Customer service person was helpful and friendly. She answered my question and gave good info.

With a 71.9% Customer Service rating, and the highest recommendation (60%) and future use (67%) scores, Trader Joe’s stands out amongst its competition as the best American grocery store.

Food Lion: A reliable, no-frills alternative to larger national chains

Food Lion is a regional supermarket chain with a strong presence across the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The store is known for its affordable pricing, convenient neighborhood locations, and carrying a broad range of everyday grocery essentials. For many of its customers, Food Lion is recognized as a reliable, no-frills alternative to larger national chains.

When negative Food Lion’s reviews on PissedConsumer do arise, these are most commonly around long checkout lines or limited staffing during peak hours. However, consumers often highlights Food Lion’s friendly staff, as in review #5894685:

They both were so professional, dressed nicely, polite and efficient..I was so moved I ask them if I could give them something for their services; they both humbly declined. God bless them both!

The quality of Food Lion’s staff is recognized by a customer service score of 85.7% (the highest on our survey), and more than 50% of reviewers stated that they would recommend the store and shop there again after leaving a review.

Costco: Customer-friendly policies

As a membership-based warehouse retailer, Costco has built a strong reputation around its bulk pricing, high-quality own-brand products, and no-frills shopping experience. Unlike traditional supermarkets, Costco keeps prices down by focusing on a carefully curated selection of groceries and household items while maintaining consistent product standards.

Costco customer reviews on PissedConsumer frequently point to the store’s customer-friendly policies as a major differentiator between other grocery stores. Many agree that when consumer issues arise, Costco is more likely than most large retailers to resolve them quickly and cheerfully. This approach is highlighted in this review (#6128748), which reinforces Costco’s status as one of the more trusted grocery stores in the U.S.

“Customer Service representative, Dawn (I think) was kind, patient, & understanding. I was a bit irate thinking my order was delivered to another house. She answered all questions kindly & patiently & mentioned mailbox. She then waited til I checked & thats where order was. I thanked her, but she was still patient & kind. The world needs more people like her.”

With service like this, it’s easy to see why Costco has a customer service score of 70.6% on the PissedConsumer survey, with 51% of respondents saying they would recommend the store.

Kroger: Affordable price, good service

Another big player in the US grocery market, Kroger operates a wide network of stores under multiple regional brands. The store is known for competitive pricing, loyalty rewards, and a strong private-label offering. As such, Kroger appeals to shoppers looking for affordability without sacrificing product variety or quality.

Consumer reviews on PissedConsumer suggest that Kroger has a relatively structured approach to customer service, working across multiple support channels to resolve customer issues (as highlighted in review #6143057).

Easy solution to my problem. This person was very accommodating and treated me respectfully and kind. Thank you

While customer complaints still arise around payments, returns, and service delays, 61.2% of customers report that their consumer issues are ultimately addressed. This helps Kroger maintain solid recommendation (36%) and future use (55%) scores among major U.S. grocery retailers.

Albertsons: Praised for convenient neighbourhood locations

Known for its convenient neighborhood locations, wide selection of fresh produce, and regular promotions, Albertsons is one of the largest grocery chains in the United States. But is it one of the best grocery chains in the US?

While customer reviews on PissedConsumer suggest concerns about store management and product freshness at times, some shoppers report that the store performs well in customer service responsiveness and issue resolution.

Albertsons immediately took action and investigated the charges. Within days after being notified that they cleared me of responsibility, I received full refund.

While Albertsons scores a 75% customer service satisfaction rate, only 43% of reviewers said they would visit the store again, and only 29% would recommend the retailer to a friend or colleague. This may suggest that Albertsons cannot be complacent about its ranking amongst the nation’s best grocery stores.

What Are the Worst Grocery Stores in the USA?

Based on consumer feedback collected by PissedConsumer, the American grocery stores that most frequently received complaints about poor customer service, unresolved issues, and low recommendation rates include Safeway, Aldi Grocery, Dollar General Corporation, Walmart, and Target.

List of the Worst Supermarkets in the USA

Company Recommendation, %

CS Satisfaction, %

Future Use, % Score
Safeway 20 33.3 37 1003
Aldi Grocery 36 58.5 30 1245
Dollar General Corporation 18 57.3 52 1273
Walmart 27 56.1 51 1341
Target 42 63.8 37 1428

We calculated the ranking of the worst grocery stores in the USA based on the following factors:

  • Low retention rates
  • Below-average customer service satisfaction
  • Weak recommendation intent

The list starts with the worst-rated food store.

Safeway: “Never leave without checking your receipt”

With 802 reviews and an average rating of just 2.3 on PissedConsumer, Safeway is in the unenviable position of being ranked as the worst grocery store in the USA by the platform users. This brand has been a familiar name in American grocery shopping for more than a century. But just because the store has been around for a long time, doesn’t mean they always get things right.

While Safeway is often praised in PissedConsumer reviews for its convenient locations and competitive pricing, negative customer reviews consistently highlight billing discrepancies and poor follow-up from customer support teams. This poor service was highlighted in this Safeway review, which suggested they were overcharged every time they visited the store.

When attempting to go to customer service during the day, they are rude, roll their eyes, sarcastic, dismissive and will do just about anything to avoid helping customers.

With only 20% of reviewers saying they would recommend Safeway and 37% saying they would shop there again, the retailer clearly has room for improvement if it wants to see more customers returning to its stores.

Aldi Grocery: Complaints about poor in-store experience

Aldi might be famous for their high-quality products, but with a PissedConsumer rating of just 3 stars out of 5, consumers suggest that Aldi’s customer service team is unprofessional.

While Aldi hasn’t been on the US grocery scene for as long as the likes of Safeway, the European import has already clocked up enough negative reviews to rank it as PissedConsumers' second-worst grocery brand. Aldi’s low-cost model attracts budget-focused shoppers who praise the store for its good-quality own-brand products.

However, Aldi’s lean staffing approach frequently fuels negative comments, with customers often reporting negative in-store interactions and challenges resolving payment or return issues. Several reviews on PissedConsumer highlight how consumers were treated badly at the checkout, including one Aldi review from a disabled man who had problems when the cashier refused to scan his items.

As a relatively new brand to the US grocery scene, Aldi may need to dramatically increase the number of customers (currently just 30%) who recommend its service to capture the nation’s consumers’ hearts and minds as a preferred shopping destination.

Dollar General Corporation: Customer service is not always on the money

As one of the largest discount grocery stores in the United States, Dollar General Corporation operates thousands of small-format stores across urban, suburban, and rural communities. Known for its low prices and easy access to everyday essentials, the chain has become a go-to option for quick grocery trips and budget-conscious shoppers, particularly in areas underserved by larger supermarkets.

However, that promise of convenience comes with trade-offs. Reviews on PissedConsumer frequently point to issues with Dollar General Corporation’s customer service, store conditions, and product quality. As the company continues to expand, consumer feedback, including reviews about untidy stores, suggests that maintaining consistent service standards remains an ongoing challenge.

The prices are good but this store is always nasty and cluttered There are uboats all over you can not roll a buggy down the aisles and you can never find anything! There are empty food wrappers and drink bottles all over from where the employees eat and drink while they work that are left on the shelves and now there is a swarm of honey bees buzzing all over the store…

Currently, only 18% of reviewers of Dollar General Corporation on PissedConsumer would recommend the store. This is the lowest recommendation score on the survey, suggesting that their problems are more deeply rooted than a clean-up in the aisles.

Walmart: Big is not always better

Walmart might be the largest and most dominant retailer in the United States, serving millions of consumers every day in its supercenters, neighborhood markets, and via its online platforms – but that doesn’t save it from appearing in PissedConsumer’s list of worst grocery stores.

Unsurprisingly, Walmart has attracted over 15.7K reviews on PissedConsumer. It could be argued that Walmart’s size is both its strength and its weakness. While many shoppers shop at Walmart for affordability and convenience, customer reviews often highlight inconsistent service quality, long resolution times, and challenges with returns and online orders.

While online shopping with Walmart has made the buying process quicker and more convenient for many consumers, when things go wrong, some shoppers suggest that customer support speeds can be more analog.

Be careful when ordering with Walmart; they will not help you if your package has been stolen. If anything, they give you the runaround and tell you they will email you back within seven to ten business days.

Target: “Humiliating and unprofessional”

Target is another huge brand that may be disappointed to discover itself on this list of the worst grocery stores in the USA. This well-known retail chain blends grocery shopping with general merchandise. As such, shoppers are drawn to Target for its curated product selection, competitive pricing on everyday items, and the convenience of combining groceries with clothing, home goods, and electronics in a single trip. But this doesn’t mean that Target is immune to negative reviews.

Online reviews on PissedConsumer frequently point to frustrations around Target’s customer service responsiveness, order accuracy, and payment or refund issues. Sometimes, the bad service feels more personal. In this (now resolved) case, the reviewer felt like they were treated with disrespect when trying to return a wrongly supplied product.

My sister bought a sealed iPad from the Target store in Eatontown, NJ, and paid in cash. When we opened the box at home, it contained a Samsung tablet inside, clearly not the product we purchased. We returned to the store with the receipt, the box, and the Samsung tablet, expecting help. Instead, we were laughed at by the staff, accused of trying to scam them, and told nothing could be done. We were calm, respectful, and had all the proof in hand, including photos. It was humiliating and unprofessional.

While Target is ranked amongst the worst grocery stores in the USA in the PissedConsumer survey, all is not lost. With a 63.80% customer support satisfaction rate and a 42% recommendation score, with a little more focus and resolution, there is no reason why they cannot move up into our next cohort of retailers.

Grocery Stores Comparison Based on Customer Reviews

While price and product selection might initially get the customer through the door of a store, it’s good customer service that determines whether they come back again.

Our reviewers tell us that the best grocery stores in America are not those that never make mistakes, but the ones that resolve issues quickly and without making customers jump through hoops.

With so many grocery stores to choose from, finding the right one can feel overwhelming. That’s why we created a detailed comparison chart for all 10 supermarkets in this report, combining survey results with real customer reviews from PissedConsumer to highlight where each brand truly stands on pricing, service, and overall experience.

Company Recommendation % CS Satisfaction % Future Use % Score
Target 42 63.8 37 1428
Walmart 27 56.1 51 1341
Dollar General Corporation 18 57.3 52 1273
Aldi Grocery 36 58.5 30 1245
Safeway 20 33.3 37 1003

Are online reviews reliable?

While individual customer reviews might be seen as subjective, patterns are not.

PissedConsumer’s aggregated review insights reveal structural strengths and weaknesses that single experiences cannot expose. When thousands of customer reviews point to issues like delayed refunds, unhelpful staff, billing errors, or general poor levels of customer service, those signals become difficult for consumers and brands to ignore.

Have you had a positive or negative experience with a US grocery store? Why not add to the bigger picture and write a review?

Survey Methodology

Consumer advocacy site PissedConsumer.com conducted an online survey of its users between November 2022 and November 2025. The survey collected feedback from 9,642 respondents across the United States, who shared their real customer experiences with the nation’s major grocery store brands.

For this report, participants were asked to evaluate their interactions with customer service agents and their overall shopping experience. While the original survey covered multiple aspects of the consumer experience, this study highlights three core questions:

  • How likely would you use the service in the future?
  • How satisfied were you with the customer service representative you spoke to?
  • How likely would you recommend the store to your friends or colleagues?

To calculate the rating of the company with the best customer service, we multiply each of the above 3 factors by the given coefficient of 10. Final scores were calculated using the following formula:

Overall Score = (Recommendation % × 10) + (Satisfaction % × 10) + (Future Use % × 10)

While overall response counts varied by question, each company included in the rankings received at least 50 valid responses per question, ensuring a reliable sample size for comparison.

Results were analyzed to identify trends in issue resolution, customer satisfaction, and consumer loyalty, forming the foundation for the rankings presented throughout this report.

I totally disagree about Aldi. I never have a problem returning an item or customer service. I think they have the best prices and some of the best products. Aldi and Trader Joes are the top, then Food Lion and Harris Teeters.
Rick #30301
I have a nominee for worst grocery stores. WORST; Kroger Next to WORST; Giant Eagle Both stores highly overpriced. Kroger ripped me off once for $20. I can get a half gallon of milk at Aldi's for what I'd pay for a quart at Giant Eagle. Eggs/dozen are approx. half at Aldi's compared to Giant Eagle and Kroger.
Michael #30329
I did not see any reviews about "Publix". A large grocery chain in FL and I believe in some of other southern states.I am familiar with Publix because I lived in FL and I remember their stores going back to the late 50's and early 60's when I was a kid vacationing in Florida.Big stores, very bright when you walk in. I saw their newer stores or remodels were putting customer service right in the entrance when you enter the store. Not a half mile down the entrance as many stores have done and still do.EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember they were always helpful no matter what the issue was. And there were almost always 3 people working in customer service all the time. There weekly deals were great. Prices were fair and very competitive with other markets in the area.I miss them a lot. I have Fry's, part of Kroger, and Safeway which was bought by Albertsons. They said the merger would bring down the prices. NEVER HAPPENED. Safeway plays games with pricing. One week it is $1.99 the next week it is $3.99 and they take a dollar off, so it is $2.99. They pay 3-4 people to come in Tuesday afternoon and work all night until every new tag is physically applied to each product. So corporate prints the tage, sends them to the store, one person takes them out, she comes in earlier, maybe 1:00 or 2:00 to arrange all the tags so they are mapped out to the stores layout. The only way you can win with the supermarket is to shop the big sale items or the weekend deals or whatever your market calls. And plan you meals ahead and look for sales on the items you are going to use and need for special occasions or holidays and do not wait for the last minute.Be a good consumer and a smart consumer at the same time.

I feel sorry for you all because you don’t have HEB that is only in Texas. The store brands from H-E-B are wonderful & usually better quality and much cheaper. And if you have to return some thing, they apologize profusely and give you your money back with no excuses or questions. HEB is the best. Poor other states we feel sorry for you. Happy, Texas H-E-B shopper.
Sheri Heffner #30338
Don't get Great Value products. I bought frozen fries one time and they tasted like they were fried in oil that had a fishy taste.
Donna #30341
Agree with the HEB comment. Great Texas chain. Should be a way to include in the survey. they support so many local organizations AND veterans. If you have an FPO/APO address, they will ship large box of groceries (non-perishable) for $5. Kept my daughter in her Texas Pecan coffee and jalapeño chips.
Charles Martin #30360
You completely missed this. HEB is by far the best as measured by their customers. It's not close. Wegman's and Publix are great. Kroger, in your top group, is terrible. Again, their customers rate them extremely poor. These studies are available but you'll have to pay. Since you did your own study and missed so badly, consider paying for the study and write a real article.
HelpCenter_PissedConsumer #30409
Thank you for your feedback. We understand that many shoppers have strong opinions about brands like H-E-B, Wegmans, and Publix. For this report, only companies with at least 50 valid responses for each survey question were included in the ranking, which is why some chains were not featured. More details are available in the methodology section. If you’d like to explore reviews for H-E-B, Wegmans, Publix, or other grocery stores, you can search for them on PissedConsumer. Carol Fawcett #30374
I get great customer service at local Aldi store. I love the prices Only complaint is products I like are often not seen again after 1 time purchase
Helena #30377
What about Temu? They are the worst company ever. They are doing things illegally and get away with it. I ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past few yrs. They don't send the items advertised and that you order they send garbage. And they give you a hard time if you ask for your refund. They use false delay tactics and they should be closed down. Alot of customers complain about them also. Someone should look into this asap
HelpCenter_PissedConsumer #30408
Thank you for sharing your experience. Temu was not included in this ranking because it is an e-commerce marketplace, not a grocery store chain. That said, concerns about Temu’s business practices have also been raised by other consumers. We recently published an article on this topic here: https://help-center.pissedconsumer.com/are-temu-rewards-legit/
Donna Quilty #30383
I found this list frustrating as many of the store on the best list are not in the northeast where I live in Massachusetts. Where does Market Basket, Shaw's, and Stop & Shop rank?
Neilfan57 #30401
What about Wegmans? That store is excellent. Clean, great service, no problem with returns and huge selection. If you can't find it there, you won't find it.
HelpCenter_PissedConsumer #30407
Thank you for your comment. This ranking only includes grocery brands that received at least 50 valid responses for each question in our survey, which is why some regional chains were not included. You can find more details in the methodology section of the article. If you’d like to look up customer feedback for Market Basket, Shaw’s, or Stop & Shop, you can browse grocery store reviews in our Food Stores category here: https://www.pissedconsumer.com/search-companies/category/grocery.html
Donna Quilty #30384
I live in Massachusetts and I love Market Basket. It has the lowest prices, the widest selection, the best customer service and the friendliest workers. Everyone I know feels this way about Market Basket! One of my favorite items is their store brand rotisserie chickens. They are big and plump and they are only $4.69 each. Maybe the reason you don't have as many comments on this store is that people are so happy that they would never go on the Pissed Customer site. They just don't have any complaints. I didn't realize until today that you could post good comments here.
Kirk Lehrmann #30385
I say Albertson's is the Worst and Tom Thumb people are Rude and Follow me around the store every time I am in there. They Have camera's so it is just directed to me to shop elsewhere. The CS Brenda was the Rudest CS tech I have Ever encountered and could not believe have she talked to me.I shop at Kroger's.I have Never stolen any thing from any of these Groceries. I do not Need too and it would be humiliating for me to get caught.TOM THUMB SUCKSI do not like Aldi's Selections but I have shopped there. I Like it ice Cream and Pizza and that is about It.Trader Joe's was the best for there friendly people.Market Street good people too.Walmart's is like Albertson's and Tom Thumb They come and Stare right at you the entire time I ring up my own stuff and it is Annoying and very Self Conscience.I hate being treated and feel like a thief shopping at Walmart'sTarget has Horrible people working there
Diane Williams #30447
Haven't had a problem yet from any of these stores shop on line but my major store is Shoprite and amazon sometimes Shein I have shooed at temu their merchandise is flimsy and directions is not in english
Judith Calhoun #30448
Walmart is worse than any. of them. They have been sued repeatedly for overcharging in the meat department. Look closely at the price and the unit price. If you are purchasing 2 pounds of hamburger at $4.49 a pound you should never be paying $18. or $20 that's what the package will state as a price. Take that package of hamburger and go over to the produce department and weigh it. Even the fruit is over priced, I say weigh everything. Me, I go to food lion for my major shopping.
Justin Wood #30456
Someone should also do a survey where employees rate customer interactions. I work in a grocery store and customers are rude, stupid, lazy, entitled, and overly demanding.Honestly, the way people act, we should just pour slop into a huge trough and say, "here's your grocery store you slovenly wildebeast".Dealing with consumers in this country is tiring and rage inducing. Reflect for a moment on how you act in public. Adjust significantly.Americans, and especially Virginians, are spoiled, rude, arrogant, lazy, and not very bright, if I'm being honest.Customer service can only go so far in a culture that demands a never ending stream of options at a low price and it must be available now.
PTTODP #30459
It appears to me that the stores featured here are stores that a great number of the black population shop, & many other minorities. I am not seeing grocery stores such as Weis, Whole Foods, &/or Giant; Where in my opinion, selections can be over priced, variety low, stock sometimes outdated, with standoffish customer service. Or am I interpreting this article incorrectly?
Alan Applegate #30466
In Roswell, NM we have three real grocery stores, and two wannabes. In order of my satisfaction, it is Walmart, Sams Club (side by side location), Country Markets (three locations) and Albertsons (two locations). The wannabes are Target and Dollar General (three locations). The wannabes try to be a grocery story, but since neither offer produce calling them grocery stores is a stretch. Of the three, Walmart, Sams Club has the best prices and at least twice the selections of the other two combined! All three have a liquor department, with the north location of Country Market being the best in selection.Like the three grocery stores, Walgreens (two locations) does have a pharmacy, a liquor department, and limited grocery items. But due to their now-reduced hours, no weekend pharmacy, and $90+ million debt, their viability is on the verge of bankruptcy, hence I've ceased doing business with Walgreen's.One thing I don't understand is the low rating's for Walmart, Sams Club. With their recent all-stores resettings, Walmart, Sams Club have the widest selection of groceries of any grocery store I'm aware of. Things might be different, but we don't have an H.A.B. or a Kroger within 200 miles of Roswell.
