Transparency matters, especially when it comes to pricing. So when Amazon hit the headlines for reportedly considering highlighting the impact of Trump’s tariffs on some of its imported products, we took notice.

Let’s rewind.

Earlier this year, on April 2, 2025, President Trump’s administration announced a new wave of tariffs with a baseline of 10%. This strategy, aimed at reducing the US trade deficit and protecting American industries, has been a key part of the current administration's economic policy.

As Amazon relies heavily on imported goods to stock its virtual shelves, the cost of these tariffs, nearly always passed on to the consumer, becomes very apparent on its marketplace. Prices may go up. Deals may become harder to find. And sometimes, products disappear. The problem for Amazon is that if they don't highlight the additional costs of the tariffs, it looks like they are raising prices.

Knowing that savvy consumers have always turned to online shopping to find the best deals, we turned to the reviews posted by our community. They help understand what consumers think about how big online retailers communicate about how tariffs impact consumers.

Key Insights

  • Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter, and can lead to price increases on imported products and raw materials.
  • Many products sold on Amazon have seen an average price increase of 29% since April 9, 2025.
  • US tariffs on Chinese goods were reduced to 30% (from a high of 125% on most Chinese imports) for a period of 90 days on May 12, 2025.

Will Amazon Display Tariffs?

The question “When will Amazon display tariffs?” has largely been put to bed. According to The Washington Post, while the issue of how tariffs will affect Amazon customers was discussed, the proposed plan to display tariff information on the Amazon Haul service was never approved and will not happen. This move was applauded by President Trump, who praised Amazon founder Jeff Bezos for doing "the right thing." But is it?

Is Amazon Doing “The Right Thing?”

While many consumers now understand how tariffs affect prices, it's important to remember that opinions vary about how American businesses should manage them. These opinions come from across the political landscape, reflecting the diversity of our consumer base.

Should Amazon Treat Tariffs Just Like Sales Tax?

We turned to the reviews on PissedConsumer to see what real shoppers think.

“As seen in numerous reports, consumers are frustrated by hidden costs at checkout, often tied to tariffs that aren't clearly disclosed,” says Michael Podolsky, co-founder and CEO of PissedConsumer.com. “When platforms like Amazon fail to break down tariff charges alongside other fees, it undermines trust and leaves shoppers confused about what they’re actually paying for.”

Many shoppers highlight how Amazon should be able to treat tariffs like any other tax imposed on sales. This can be seen in review #6592338, which highlights how tariffs impact consumers and suggests that Amazon should do more to stand up for the consumer:

Have the guts to do the right thing and show how much your costs will increase per tariffs… You shouldn’t be forced to take the blame because someone else does something to make your prices go up. Just like sales tax, you would tell us if some kind of distribution issue caused prices to go up.

Some reviewers take a more political stance. For example, this review #6593651 suggests that Amazon is overstepping its remit as an online retailer and taking an anti-American stance when considering implementing Amazon tariffs on its product pages.

Go ahead and display information about the tariffs from your Chinese friends. I have been with Amazon for many years… But when you clearly do left-wing crap such as displaying Chinese tariff information, clearly an anti-American step, it's over the line. I have already canceled my Prime…

In review #6593119, a user pointed out that Amazon’s competitors, like Temu, are showing import fees on their product pages, noting that if they can do it, why can’t Amazon:

I’m seriously considering not using Amazon for any more purchases… It’s only fair to show how much tariffs are costing those of us who use Amazon. TEMU shows customers the import fee. They are not scared… Bezos needs to stand up for the American consumer...

Other Amazon reviews also indicate frustration about the lack of transparency. For these shoppers, transparency isn’t just about numbers. It’s about trust. They understood that Amazon might not control the tariffs, but believed the platform should at least explain the price hikes.

The Impact of Trump’s Tariffs on Consumers

Should Amazon Be More Transparent About Tariffs?

One thing is clear: tariffs are no longer a behind-the-scenes trade policy. They’re shaping your shopping cart. And how companies like Amazon respond to them is becoming a matter of consumer trust.

What do you think about how tariffs affect consumers like you? How should companies like Amazon deal with consumer issues related to them? Your opinion matters. Why not add your voice to the latest consumer news and write a review

I would like to see how much I’m paying for tariffs separated like the sales tax re: transparency.

I have to heartily disagree with Review #6592338. I'm a right wing conservative and would love to see the Chinese tariff costs broken out in Amazon pricing. I'm genuinely unclear on how the writer interprets that as a left wing action. From my point of view, it will allow me to avoid Chinese made products, which I've been working on doing for the last 10+ years.

A tariff is on the wholesale price, not the retail price. So if there is a 20% tariff the retail price should not rise 20%.

I have bought from Amazon for years but I stopped buying from them this year, prices are up significantly on everything, and if you don't have prime the shipping cost is crazy, though people who have prime are really paying the shipping, they just don't realize it, why do you think theres a subscription to prime. These tariffs just make everything more expensive, there's no savings on purchases nor shipping for that matter, this just forces people to buy all American made stuff in the US, meaning everything you buy is pricey / expensive. Who's to blame, I blame the orange clown in the white house and his administration for the stupid idea of tariffs.
Siouxz1 #20207
I think everyone who sells anything that's price is affected by tariffs should show it in explicit detail. Where it came from, the tariffs percentage, and total added price to the item. The only people objecting are those who don't want their delusions challenged.

It's shameful what Amazon is doing, overcharging customers.
Sherri kaiset #20232
I have left Amazon years ago ago , will never go back to them., been getting emails to come back, but I delete them
Marlies McDonald #20243
Having been a customer for many years, I agree with the previous comments. Amazon has been raising its fees quietly for a number of years but now it's more than high time to openly state tariff increases.
David Felts #20249
My use of Amazon will change because of tariffs. I will not purchase from or subsidise a company that is not truthful.
Dennis #20252
Amazon iin the Last 6 months has become a SHIT COMPANY! Their Customer Service SUCKS and delivery leaves alot to be desired. Products ordered with a PRIME delivery date of 3 days is 2 weeks if you don't want to waste your money on PRIME. You call customer service, which is a pain to talk to a person and then when you do get a person you can't understand a word they are saying.
Vicki #20254
I'd like to see where my money is distributed when buy something. Be it the product itself, taxes or tariffs, we have a right to know!
Yoda #20262
Every item sold in the United States should be required to show the true item cost, the tarriff charged the sales tax and then the final price paid by the buyer. This is exactly how it works in the UK and most of the free world.A Tariff is indeed a TAX and should be posted.Anyone disagreeing with the TRUTH is FOOL who is conspiring to coverup the TRUTH
mindy leazott #20276
IT is awful what they are doing to customers who have been with them for years! I have cancer and a widow, SO getting out is too difficult and so if I need something I have to be price gauged!
Ron Lawson #20282
I think Amazon should definitely post what the tariffs cost. The lies about the exporting countries paying the tariffs isAn insult to the American people.Just my opinion.
Tammy F #20285
I stopped purchasing products from Amazon. I was a dedicated buyer for years but last year I started having issues with their delivery packages to me. I found out that they were delivery them to another place near me. Then Amazon allowed someone to get into my account. They tried charging me $1,000 for something I had no use for. I called them to complain and they did correct the situation. They put the money back into my account but it happened a second time. The customer service person treated it like it wasn't a big deal so I dropped them!
Roseann D #20287
Do what ebay does: They ask you before you look at items if you want to buy from US only, North America ONLY. or does not matter. That way you have a choice. As to where they are manufactured: it is your option to return items if they do not fit--or whatever reason IF the seller says free refunds.
Anonymous #20296
I would probably not buy the tariff hoods if I found something similar without a tariff.. Seems dishonest of Amazon.
Michael Vendramin #20297
For over a year now I'm trying to get Amazon to take care of a headlight issue that I had where I bought the whole assembly and it caught fire in my car and caught my car on fire it's 11,800 just to replace the hybrid cable from the front to the back Amazon has done nothing ! So why should this be any different there a to z warranty is a joke especially when the upper hand doesn't input the information so that you can get things taken care of under their warranty is you later my car got fired it's gone and I still have yet to get paid for it with all the pictures and everything that I took they've done nothing the insurance company has it there's just slow play in it you can still play it all they want to but when I go to the news as it disabled veteran doesn't relies on his car greatly with them is not going to say then I have all their emails everything from them and every one of them says oh we're going to take care of it we're going to take care of it when??

Have the courage to do the right thing and show how much Amazon costs will increase per tariffs; do not take blame that belongs elsewhere. As with sales taxes, Amazon should indicate if/when a distribution issue caused prices to go up.
Cathy #20316
I agree the tariffs should be broken down. I trust no one to raise prices then "voluntarily" lower them as tariffs go down (providing they do). Displaying them tells us that information. I am also a total 100% conservative thu and thu. I agree this isn't a left wing issue and President Trump is wrong this time appearing as though he is trying to hide something.
