Transparency matters, especially when it comes to pricing. So when Amazon hit the headlines for reportedly considering highlighting the impact of Trump’s tariffs on some of its imported products, we took notice.

Let’s rewind.

Earlier this year, on April 2, 2025, President Trump’s administration announced a new wave of tariffs with a baseline of 10%. This strategy, aimed at reducing the US trade deficit and protecting American industries, has been a key part of the current administration's economic policy.

As Amazon relies heavily on imported goods to stock its virtual shelves, the cost of these tariffs, nearly always passed on to the consumer, becomes very apparent on its marketplace. Prices may go up. Deals may become harder to find. And sometimes, products disappear. The problem for Amazon is that if they don't highlight the additional costs of the tariffs, it looks like they are raising prices.

Knowing that savvy consumers have always turned to online shopping to find the best deals, we turned to the reviews posted by our community. They help understand what consumers think about how big online retailers communicate about how tariffs impact consumers.

Key Insights

  • Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter, and can lead to price increases on imported products and raw materials.
  • Many products sold on Amazon have seen an average price increase of 29% since April 9, 2025.
  • US tariffs on Chinese goods were reduced to 30% (from a high of 125% on most Chinese imports) for a period of 90 days on May 12, 2025.

Will Amazon Display Tariffs?

The question “When will Amazon display tariffs?” has largely been put to bed. According to The Washington Post, while the issue of how tariffs will affect Amazon customers was discussed, the proposed plan to display tariff information on the Amazon Haul service was never approved and will not happen. This move was applauded by President Trump, who praised Amazon founder Jeff Bezos for doing "the right thing." But is it?

Is Amazon Doing “The Right Thing?”

While many consumers now understand how tariffs affect prices, it's important to remember that opinions vary about how American businesses should manage them. These opinions come from across the political landscape, reflecting the diversity of our consumer base.

Should Amazon Treat Tariffs Just Like Sales Tax?

We turned to the reviews on PissedConsumer to see what real shoppers think.

“As seen in numerous reports, consumers are frustrated by hidden costs at checkout, often tied to tariffs that aren't clearly disclosed,” says Michael Podolsky, co-founder and CEO of PissedConsumer.com. “When platforms like Amazon fail to break down tariff charges alongside other fees, it undermines trust and leaves shoppers confused about what they’re actually paying for.”

Many shoppers highlight how Amazon should be able to treat tariffs like any other tax imposed on sales. This can be seen in review #6592338, which highlights how tariffs impact consumers and suggests that Amazon should do more to stand up for the consumer:

Have the guts to do the right thing and show how much your costs will increase per tariffs… You shouldn’t be forced to take the blame because someone else does something to make your prices go up. Just like sales tax, you would tell us if some kind of distribution issue caused prices to go up.

Some reviewers take a more political stance. For example, this review #6593651 suggests that Amazon is overstepping its remit as an online retailer and taking an anti-American stance when considering implementing Amazon tariffs on its product pages.

Go ahead and display information about the tariffs from your Chinese friends. I have been with Amazon for many years… But when you clearly do left-wing crap such as displaying Chinese tariff information, clearly an anti-American step, it's over the line. I have already canceled my Prime…

In review #6593119, a user pointed out that Amazon’s competitors, like Temu, are showing import fees on their product pages, noting that if they can do it, why can’t Amazon:

I’m seriously considering not using Amazon for any more purchases… It’s only fair to show how much tariffs are costing those of us who use Amazon. TEMU shows customers the import fee. They are not scared… Bezos needs to stand up for the American consumer...

Other Amazon reviews also indicate frustration about the lack of transparency. For these shoppers, transparency isn’t just about numbers. It’s about trust. They understood that Amazon might not control the tariffs, but believed the platform should at least explain the price hikes.

The Impact of Trump’s Tariffs on Consumers

Should Amazon Be More Transparent About Tariffs?

One thing is clear: tariffs are no longer a behind-the-scenes trade policy. They’re shaping your shopping cart. And how companies like Amazon respond to them is becoming a matter of consumer trust.

What do you think about how tariffs affect consumers like you? How should companies like Amazon deal with consumer issues related to them? Your opinion matters. Why not add your voice to the latest consumer news and write a review

I feel we have the right to see what we are paying… all retailers should show the costs… I feel retailers will raise the prices now due to tariffs, then when the tariffs come down they’ll just leave the higher prices…

When I heard about Amazon's cowering down, I stopped my membership, knowing they would ask the reason. I hope they take a page from Wal Mart and stand up to the bullying.

Great insight, thank you.I found that one comment about it being anti-American a joke! IMO, it’s Trump’s tariffs and all of their consequences that are anti-American.Amazon should be showing the extra TAX (tariffs) for every item.I had just returned a pair of shoes that I had bought in the past and loved them. This new pair, IMO, are not of the same quality, not even close, so I returned them yesterday. This is one way for Amazon suppliers to keep the profit margin; well, that and shrinkage (no, not Georges “shrinkage” onSeinfeld ) but rather less product at the same or higher price.I am cancelling my Prime membership today that I mainly use for streaming as I just cut the cable cord last year. I wanted to wait for my refund (that was issued once I dropped it off at Purolator). The agent to whom I spoke with kept saying gift card???? I just received the delivery on Sunday and have every right to a full refund, not a gift card but nice try.
Rebecca L Woollums #20347
I'm just waiting for a refund on a gift card I had bought that was already redeemed when I went to use it. I paid $100 for it and just lost out on that money because Amazon never responded to me.

One more reason to stay away from Amazon and buy from local businesses. Yes it may cost a little more but that is the cost of freedom.
Abdul Muhammed #20350
Over-regulations and High taxes on diesel fuel have caused prices to skyrocket way before Trump's tariffs, it's just that the liberal media chose to say inflation was a "non-issue" before Trump. Suddenly it's become a "crisis"

Amazon should be transparent about tariffs and let consumers know how much they are paying on tariffs on each purchase. What does Amazon have to hide? It is a shame they would cave to political pressure rather than look after the best interests of their customers.

I don’t think I should pay for the president missteps
Tanya #20441
Interesting. Trump claims “transparency,”and has repeatedly done the opposite. What is Trump afraid of? Does he think that, by, truthfully, showing the impact if tariffs on our pocketbooks that his supporters will start to understand? And, Bezos is showing a lack of character, backbone and integrity. I have to vehemently disagree that exposing costs of tariffs is “un-American.” Actually, I’m at a complete loss as to the convoluted line of reasoning that brings that person to such a conclusion.

Stand Up To The Bully!!! Post the tariffs!!!We have a right to know!!
Daron Clifford #20454
It's a no brainer that amazon should be showing us the amount of money the tariffs are adding to the cost of a purchase. Do the right thing Bezos!!!
LarryG #20460
Display the tariffs. Tariffs are putting many businesses under as their customers are unable to afford the increased price. My my freind received a container from Turkey that was already on the water prior to the tariffs going into effect and it cost his bus an extra $100,000 to receive the container. They also had to cancel a planned expansion of their warehouse facility which would have meant more jobs. This hurts our economy.

What a hack job. We are matching tariffs other countries impose on us. We are trying to bring jobs back to America instead of outsourcing using slave labor. You fake outrage on doing the Right Thing. Ask yourself what will the long term outcome be if we bring jobs back to the US. How much better will America be if we stop allowing other Countries take advantage of us. The tariffs are the right thing to do. The price of the good they wish to sell is just that. Why are you not asking to see the cost of everyhing that adds to the price. Did you know that the Iphone cost $10 to procuce. Why are you not asking to see what really goes into the final retial price?

I have noticed that Amazon it taking a ridiculous amount of time to refund on a proper return. What was taking 3-4 days is now taking 2-3 weeks. The return process is still the same but this is ridiculous that they are holding back $$ especially that they are a multimillion dollar company

I would love to see the price…along side the price Costco now has to charge! Trump does not shop at Amazon….what does he care?
Unanimous #20551
Come on people, with prices going up because of the tariffs wouldn't the smart thing be to buy American made products, keep our money in USA.

I broke up with Amazon due to his behavior with VP Harris, for 3 months. I am now considering breaking up due to tariffs not being exposed due to TRUMP.
