Have you noticed an unexpected charge from Netflix and are wondering why you were charged and whether you can get your money back?

This article explains how Netflix refunds work, including the reasons you may be eligible for a refund, how to prepare and submit your refund request, and what you can do to escalate the issue if your refund is denied.

Key Insights

  • Netflix is among the companies with high customer satisfaction rates, according to a recent survey of the best streaming services ranked by consumers.
  • However, Netflix reviews reveal several complaints about difficulty getting refunds.
  • Customers often request refunds for accidental renewals, duplicate charges, third-party billing issues, unauthorized payments, and ongoing charges after canceling a Netflix subscription.
  • Canceling Netflix does not automatically qualify you for a refund; it stops future charges after your current billing period ends.

How Does the Netflix Refund Process Work?

There is no standard Netflix refund policy on their website. However, they do have a cancellation policy. Members can cancel their plans before the end of their billing cycle to prevent further charges.

However, Netflix reviews on PissedConsumer indicate that some customers are still charged even after successfully canceling their Netflix subscription.

For example, a customer wrote the following question (ID 211902) in the PissedConsumer community;

Netflix still charging after I received a cancellation email. Why?

I thought I was done with the service, but the charges showed up again. I'm trying to figure out if this is a common glitch or if I missed a step.

This is not an isolated incident, as in response to the question, another customer wrote that they "had the same problem.

Netflix lets you cancel at any time and continue watching until your billing period ends. You won’t be charged again unless you restart your account.

What are some legitimate reasons to request a refund?

You may be eligible for a refund under the following circumstances:

  • If you were charged after successfully canceling your Netflix subscription.
  • If you were charged twice, even though you did not switch to a higher-priced plan or add an extra member.
  • In case you see unauthorized charges.
  • If you were overcharged for a plan.

Note that Netflix reviews refund requests on a case-by-case basis and may issue a refund at its discretion.

How to Get a Refund from Netflix

To get a refund from Netflix, contact customer support directly so a representative can review your case. Here are the 2 critical steps to take to request a Netflix refund.

1. Gather the necessary information or documentation

Having everything in place makes your refund claim clear and easy for representatives to review. It also increases the chances of getting your refund approved.

Therefore, you should gather the following information:

  • Your Netflix account information, including the email address associated with your account, the number of profiles, whether you have multiple accounts, and your subscription plan.
  • A timeline of the disputed charge. When did the charge occur? When did you cancel or make changes to your account? When did you first notice an unauthorized charge or double-billing?
  • A screenshot of your cancellation confirmation email, where applicable.
  • Your payment history, where necessary, to confirm the disputed transaction or compare it with previous charges.
  • A bank or credit card statement showing the disputed charge.

If you are unsure how to organize and present the information to strengthen your refund request, the PissedConsumer Club may be a useful tool. You will get assistance from real consumer experts and step-by-step guidance for escalating your issue. Through the club, you will also learn proven strategies that companies respond to and get access to templates for filing a complaint with Netflix or any other company.

2. Contact Netflix Customer Support

Once you have the necessary information at hand and it is well organized, the next step is to contact Netflix customer service through their official channel. Present the information in a way that clearly answers these 3 questions: What happened? Why was the charge incorrect? What do you want Netflix to do about it?

Explain your case concisely and factually. Be professional and polite in your communication. Start by pointing out the disputed charge and explain why you believe it is incorrect. Then present the supporting evidence you had gathered in step 1. Finish by stating that you would like a refund.

Here is an example of how to word your complaint:

I canceled my membership on (date) and received a cancellation confirmation. However, my card was charged (amount) on (date). Kindly review the charge and issue a refund if it was made in error.

The customer representative may ask follow-up questions for clarification. Answer them as accurately and concisely as possible to further facilitate the review of your refund request.

In Netflix review #7464432, a customer reported successfully getting a refund for an unauthorized charge after contacting Netflix customer support.

They were very patient and understood my concern. They saw that it was an unauthorized transaction and quickly refunded the money and closed the account….

How to Escalate If Your Refund is Denied

It is disappointing if Netflix initially denies your refund request. However, you still have options. The right actions depend on the outcome of the review or the feedback you receive. Here are the steps to take:

1. Review your interaction with the Netflix representative to determine whether it was satisfactory.

Some customers report encountering rude, dismissive, or unhelpful representatives. In this case, it is best to contact Netflix again and ask to speak with a different representative.

2. Assess whether the reason for the refund denial is legitimate.

According to various articles on the Netflix help center, you may continue to be charged even after canceling your subscription for the following reasons:

  • If you did not complete the cancellation process
  • If auto-renewal remains active despite cancellation
  • If you or someone with access to your account restarts your membership
  • If you have multiple accounts, but only canceled one
  • If your cancellation overlaps with the renewal date or time
  • If you signed up through a third party

If a charge resulted from an active membership, cancel your subscription and complete the cancellation process by receiving a confirmation email to avoid further charges.

If the refund was denied because you paid through a third party, contact your payment provider to resolve the issue.

If yours was a case of duplicate charges, they can sometimes be legitimate. Netflix says that changing to a higher-priced plan or adding an extra member can result in two charges in the same month due to prorated billing.

3. Request that your case be reviewed by a higher-level representative

If you still think a refund is warranted, contact Netflix support and request that a higher-level customer support agent or supervisor review your case.

Once again, explain your case politely and factually, and request that the decision be reconsidered. Attach the relevant evidence and any other information that would strengthen your case. You may refer to the dates of previous interactions with Netflix representatives, the case or reference number, the representative's response, and any emails you received.

4. Escalate with a third party or authorities

If your efforts to resolve the refund issue with Netflix prove unsuccessful, consider the following options for further escalation:

  • Dispute the charge with your credit card issuer or bank. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), you generally must notify the credit card issuer within 60 days from the date the first statement showing the charge was sent to you to dispute it under federal law.
  • Report to the FTC. If you believe the Netflix charge is the result of identity theft, a scam, or unauthorized use of your payment information, file a complaint on ReportFraud.gov.
  • Turn to PissedConsumer Club for expert guidance on documenting your case, gathering supporting evidence, and figuring out what to do next when a company won’t resolve your complaint.
